Right in the heart of Amsterdam, the Van Gogh Museum is a full-on deep dive into Vincent’s world, with room after room of colour, texture, and stories behind the paintings. It’s one of those places you’ve seen a thousand times online, but it hits different when you’re standing in front of the real thing.
A treasure trove of Van Gogh’s work
This museum holds the largest collection of Van Gogh artworks in the world, and you feel that instantly. There’s a proper flow to it too, from earlier pieces influenced by Impressionism through to the later, more expressive works that basically announce modern art is coming. It’s not just “a few famous paintings” either, it’s a whole journey through his colour choices, brushwork, and the way his style shifts over time.
Sunflowers, the atmosphere, and a real-life mood check
Seeing a piece like “Sunflowers” up close is one of those bucket list moments, it genuinely feels like meeting a celebrity. But what surprised me most was how much the museum also shows the human side of Van Gogh: his struggles, his intensity, and his obsession with creating. That said, we were a group of lads in our early twenties, and after a while we did start itching for something more high-energy. Amazing art, but you can only keep the Labrador-puppy excitement contained for so long.
