Edinburgh coat of arms

Edinburgh

Travel Scotland

Edinburgh is the kind of city that hooks you instantly. History sits right on the surface (castle views, old closes, the Royal Mile), but it also feels alive with museums, festivals, cosy pubs, and big open viewpoints like Arthur’s Seat. This page collects my Edinburgh posts and top spots from a trip with friends.

Edinburgh Castle

Best for: iconic views and history

Sitting high above the city, the castle defines Edinburgh’s skyline. The views alone make the climb worthwhile, especially on a clear day.

The Royal Mile

Best for: classic Edinburgh atmosphere

Lively, historic, and full of character. Walking from the castle down to Holyrood gives you a real feel for the city’s energy and past.

Arthur’s Seat

Best for: city views and fresh air

A short hike that feels like a proper escape. Reaching the top gives you sweeping views across Edinburgh and out to the coast.

Old Town

Best for: history and hidden closes

Narrow streets, dark stone buildings, and tucked-away alleys make this area feel atmospheric and slightly mysterious.

New Town

Best for: elegant streets and shopping

Wide Georgian streets give a calmer contrast to the Old Town. It feels refined, walkable, and easy to explore.

Calton Hill

Best for: sunset viewpoints

An easy climb with big rewards. Watching the city glow as the sun goes down is one of Edinburgh’s standout moments.

Dean Village

Best for: quiet, storybook scenery

Just minutes from the centre, this riverside area feels peaceful and almost unreal. It is perfect for a slower wander.

Edinburgh’s Pubs and Whisky Bars

Best for: ending the day right

Cosy pubs and whisky bars are everywhere. Sitting down with a drink after exploring feels like part of the Edinburgh experience.
